KU is nationally recognized for excellence in education and research in the field of dietetics and nutrition. As a unit of the
School of Health Professions, the KU Department of Dietetics and Nutrition is located on the
University of Kansas Medical Center campus in Kansas City, Kan. where students benefit from the opportunity to interact with a large number of health care professionals and leading researchers.
KU offers the following programs in the fields of dietetics and nutrition:
Dietetic Internship Graduate Certificate prepares graduates for entry into a career as a registered dietitian. Students must have completed a baccaleureate degree from an accredited university or college and complete coursework approved by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE) of the American Dietetic Association. Upon completion of the requirements for the Dietetic Internship, students are eligible for the registration examination to acquire the RD credential. Course work completed for the MS degree does not make a student eligible to become a registered dietitian.
Master of Science in Dietetics and Nutrition is designed for professionals in nutrition and other careers with a science background. There are many benefits of this degree, such as expanded job opportunities and increased knowledge in the science of nutrition. Students often choose the MS program as an avenue toward a doctoral degree in nutrition, medicine or other health sciences. Students seeking to work toward the Master of Science by distance can achieve this through an online MS degree made available through the Great Plain Interactive Distance Education Alliance.
Courses in nutrition are also available to students who are not seeking a degree or working professionals interested in continuing education.
PhD in Medical Nutrition Science targets students with degrees in nutrition or biological sciences. The program provides the opportunity for clinical and translational research at a world-class academic health center renowned for its research facilities. This program emphasizes training in the core sciences of nutrition, biochemistry, biostatistics and the most advanced research methodology. Students may enroll with a Bachelor of Science or Master of Science degree.
